My maternal grandfather, Henry Mathis, reportedly died in the St. Francis Dam tragedy, along with his (second) wife and two children. I have also been told he was employed as an engineer at Powerhouse No. 2. I am interested in obtaining definitive information regarding these reports; any assistance is appreciated.

A Great web site. I know I will spend alot of time with this. I have always enjoyed researching and visiting old historical sites and mines [gold]. Acton is full of them. Some with tunnels as deep as 500 feet and branch out 9 miles. The old grave site off Sand Canyon is great to visit this time of year the wild flowers are all blooming. >>> Another good reference is SAGA OF RANCHO EL TEJON by Frank F Latta Bear State Books. Lots of old photographs and information about Don Jose Jesus Lopez. Old cowboy tack and equipment. The book can be found in Bakersfield Pioneer Village or Fort Teton store.

I read about your Web site in the Society of Hispanic Historical and Ancestral Research monthly newsletter. As I am interested in genealogy and California history I found your site most interesting (many stories and pictures). Next time I am on my way to Los Angeles I will definitely stop in the Santa Clarita Valley and do some "exploring". I work at West Hills Community College and have shared your site with some of our geography/California History instructors. Again, congratulations on your wonderful site.

Very thorough & interesting website. The widespread development in formerly remote spots such as Pico Cyn, Sand Cyn, etc. is distressing, but you've provided a valuable service by preserving the SCV history in photos and personal accounts. I'm a '72 graduate of Hart High.

The photo of the man shown on your web-site at the following address: http://www.scvhistory.com/scvhistory/wr5407.htm is not Dan White as you have stated. Dan White was my grandfather, and he was in the movie "Suddenly", but that is not him. My grandfather was in over 200 movies (I have found approx 120 titles so far), and many of them were filmed in, and around the Newhall area. I do not know who the man shown in the photo is, but it is not my grandfather. Thank you.

This site is wonderful! I grew up in Long Beach CA., daughter of Vernon "Gabby" Garrison. Dad raced at Saugus Speedway for many years, and was a favorite to many racing fans. I have fond memories of those Saturday nights at the track and of listening to the many versions of the evenings events, while enjoying a generous portion of chile spaghetti at Saugus Cafe. To some, this was a weekly ritual, but to my family, it was a way of life. It was a sad day when the track was closed permanently, just a few years ago. We also took occasional trips to Vasquez Rocks for picnics and hikes. It's no wonder I made Santa Clarita my home of choice. I would like to see more written about Saugus Speedway and the many racers who came and left there through the years.

My father, Charles Joe Raggio, was one of seven sons born to the union of Frank D. Raggio and Fern Sotelo. He and his brothers were raised on the Raggio Ranch in San Francisquito Canyon where they produced their own wines, honey and raised their own beef. Mr. Raggio was an invaluable resource and great source of knowledge regarding the construction and subsequent failure of the St. Francis Dam.

Regretfully, Mr. Charles Joe Raggio passed from this earth on December 20, 2000, taking a great deal of this knowledge with him. He will be greatly missed.

May my beloved Father Rest in Peace.
