What a thrill to revisit Newhall and its history! I was born in the Newhall Hospital, graduated from Newhall Grammar School and Hart High -class of 1950. The pictures of the Newhall School fire, 1939, brought back memories. My dad was the principal of the school and I remember him rushing out to the school in a state of panic. I was sad because the valentines from my kindergarten class burned up in the fire that night.

I am looking for background information about Charles Alexander Mentry of the "famous" Mentryville. My grandfather's name is Hugh Alexander Mentry - any chance you know the relationship?? Hugh Alexander was probably born in either Canada or upstate New York in the 1890's. Let me know.

I grew up in Newhall in the 60s and 70s. My father owned a local tavern called "The Trails". It was on San Fernando Rd. It is no longer there. Back then, Newhall was a lot like Mayberry. It was a very nice place to live.

I am one of the step-granddaughters of Burt Hunick who resided with his family on the Carey Ranch until the dam broke. While his father, C.H. Hunick is listed as "Known Injured" in the L.A. Times "Collection of Headlines" dated March 14, 1928, no mention of this family is made on this site. Only Burt and his father survived that night -- the rest of their family was killed and C.H. died within a year from injuries.

Hi Leon, Just found out there was a school on San Francisquito road in 1928 that was wiped out when the dam broke. The picture was taken on March 9, 1928. Mrs. Nelma Raggio sent it to the SCV Historical Society in 1982. I was just wondering if there was any historical value, to add to your web site. You are still doing a great job. My family was there and would like to find out more. Thanks.
