This is John Nielsen, the Environment Correspondent at NPR in Washington DC, and a proud graduate of Piru Elementary School. I'm writing a book about the life and times of the California condor for Harper Collins and am looking for folks who might be able to help describe the following places and incidents:

The 1960s fight over whether to dam Sespe Creek.

--The geology and geography of the Sespe condor sanctuary.

--Karl Koford, Ian and Eban McMillan, Ed Harrison and/or others associated with the bird.

--Famous people who have come to look at condors.

--Egg collecting.

--Things your parents and/or friends used to tell you about condors. (Mike Ortega used to tell me they ate gringos; Mike's father told him they ate kids who didn't do as they were told.)

--Funny/strange/dramatic condor sightings.

I moved to saugus in 1968. I lived there for about 10 years. I lived in the new section of American Beauty Homes. We lived through 2 fires, snow, flooding, and an earth quake still we would not move despite all of the disasters. Being able to play in the mountains and fields was wonderful. I thought I was the luckiest kid alive. My other love was going to Saugus Speedway on a saturday night and watching my heros like Roarin Orin Prosser, Jim Gilliam, Jim Thirketle and so on. If I had it my way I would still be living in Saugus it's a great place rich in history. This is a great web site!

When I was 5 yrs. old (1953), I and my parents would come from Brawley Ca. to visit Patsy and Snooky Burlison (they had two sons and a daughter.) This family lived on a ranch with water tanks on the hills behind their home,(on the north),there was a cemetery just to the south of their place and not to far east of the ranch was a small food store. I think the ranch was somewhere between Chatsworth and Newhall. I loved visiting this area and though I didn't live here (I wish I had) I do get homesick just looking at the photos on this site !! I'd like to find the ranch or at least the area and get the name of that cemetery too! Thank you for having this site !

Wow! What a Great Site. I enjoyed looking through the guest book and finding names of some I went to school with. My Family moved to the New Bonelli Tract in 1960, and I graduated Hart in 1961. I can well remember going up the canyon and seeing pieces of the dam laying around, but did not realize until Years later, what a great disaster it was. I think I found it on the Discovery Channel. I'm still trying to figure out why the famous road was named after him.

Thanks for the Great Memories!

We have spent much time enjoying Central Park and speculating about the history of the area. We'd like very much to read more about this part of our city. We've thought perhaps the land was originally settled by an Italian family, because of the olive groves and rosemary gardens. Concrete foundations used to be seen within the park area but now mainly exist in the fenced off part, which is a wonderful wildlife preserve. The most fascinating and puzzling artifact, though, is some manmade arrangements of huge boulders that appear to be blocking caves on the southwest facing bluffs above the new section of the park. It is an enigma how someone moved those enormous stones, especially on the side of a cliff. Are these of Native American origin? We are so lucky to have this park. Thanks, Santa Clarita!

I have a copy of an article written about "Aunt Lydia" describing her accounts of growing up in your area. It was printed in the Newhall Signal & Saugus Enterprise, dated August 25, 1985. Your area has some very deep, rich roots. Some of them are mine. Your site is very easy to navigate, I enjoyed it very much. Thank you.

The first time I heard of the St. Francis Dam disaster was in 1963 in a college geology class. Being a native southern Californian, I was shocked that I had never previously learned of this terrible disaster. Upon confronting my parents (also natives of Glendale) I heard of Glendale waking up to three feet of water and other such stories. Now at age 60, I am still surprised at how few Californians know of this terrible tragedy and the resulting witchhunt that brought down Mulholland.

My Grandfather use to tell stories of riding in rodeo's . I remember him talking of William S. Hart, and movie stars like Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. coming out to rodeo's. He said during the depression he would ride horses for the studio's . The best way to stay alive was get on the fastest horse and stay in front and be sure not to fall off. Pregnant women even rode to make money. Leonard Cesena use to take supplies up to ranger stations and stock streams in the Angeles Crest. He would have to break the pack mules on the trail. My mother has old newspaper clippings and old pictures when Grandfather was in the (forestry), Fire Dept. I wish I would of listened to my Grandfather's great stories. My Grandmother told stories of driving to Pacoima during prohibition to buy alcohol. I've seen the handmade horsehair ropes she would make. Leonard Cesena was Born Aug. 1905 if I remember correctly. Angelina Acosta Cesena Aug. 1907. I still use the saddle and also have the handmade bit my Great Grandfather Acosta gave to my Grandfather Leonard. Leonard Cesena retired from the Malibu Fire Dept. Captain 1955. I thought my grandfather lost a brother in the St. Francis flood. Never talked about it . These stories were told to me when my grandparents were in their 80's,so the authenticity could be debated.

Also, if anyone knows anything about the abandoned house that sits just north of that interchange, on Zanubia Rd. just off of Quail Lake Rd. Also, and this may be a bit obscure, why does the water tank at the old Knapp Ranch have the words "Mickey Mouse Ranch" painted on it? Pleas help another history nerd! Thank you.

A resident of Castaic in 45-51 I attended Castaic Union School, where my mother was Secretary. She worked at the school several years where she wore almost every hat. She was substitute bus driver, nurse, principal and teacher. Her name was Fern Stiers. In her spare time she was Secretary to the P. T. A., the local saddle club and even rode the ambulance as an E. M. T. She was most likely the first woman to do so. She was a divorcee and even taught first aid classes at night school to make ends meet for her four children.

She is to turn 91 years young this February 2003, and still reconciles her own checking account each month. Almost as remarkable as Mrs. Callahan that lived on the old ridge route, who of course we knew.

My own history is not so remarkable. I married Newhall's local boy Bob Conner in 1957, and was a stay at home mom for two wonderful kids. In 1965 we opened a garage in the building with a serpentine front, located two doors south of the well-known Saugus Cafe. Now in 2003, our son Randy has an automotive business at almost the same location called, "Dominators".

Our daughter and son-inlaw both work for local High Schools in the Newhall area. I am retired in beautiful, but damp, Washington state.

My first husband, the late (Bob Conner ), was born in 1935 at the old Newhall Hospital. A seven month baby, weighing only 5 pounds, he was actually sent home to die. The doctor never dreamed that he would survive to be a six foot man and to play football at Hart High's class of 1952. He went to work for Chevron Oil as a junior in High school and worked several years for Loren Clymore at the local Ford dealership in Newhall before starting his own business, called, "Bob's Automotive".

Years ago I went thru the Tropico mine and remember a small museum. When and why did this close down? Where did the museum contents go to-another museum? We went to the Cat House in Rosamond last weekend and could not find the answers.

I can identify pictures of hs6001 and hs6002; that was my mother Dorothy Hunt. She owned the ModeODay dress shop on S.F. Rd. until 1968. Thanks -- I'll send her this as she still is alive in Fresno, Ca. Her email is dotnjimh@aol.com.

Webmaster's Note: Thank you very much for the information; it has been added to the website!

Visiting this site to get information about Soledad Canyon/ Acton since we have managed to camp there every Memorial weekend for the past 7 years. Thought it was about time that our family knew more about the town than the camp ground.

Interesting but not complete. The Log Cabin Motel and Texaco Gas Station was owned in the early l950's by Malcolm and Lucille Simmons and was called Mac & Dave's Texaco. The Dave in the name was their son David Rennie who I married in 1956 after going steady for three years. I spent a lot of time at the Texaco Station and have pictures of it. They owned the station when the movie the Desperate Hours was filmed and a lot of the cast and crew stayed at the motel. We really enjoyed watching the movie whenever it came on TV. Earlier, I read about Solemint Junction and it was mentioned that the station had been owned by a family named Simmons, but this time it was deleted. I wanted to set the record straight, as I spent many hours and days there and even lived there for a while when our house in Mint Canyon burned down in 1953. Dave worked at the station after school and ate across the street at the restaurant a lot.
