My great great uncle was Ed Warren. He was a stuntman in the silent film westerns. The only story I know about him is that as a young boy, he would tighten up the clothes line and walk it. He was said to be a gifted stuntman. He lived in Newhall CA. If you know anything about Ed Warren I would appreciate your correspondence.

Tryng to track down a boat's manufacturer and the only ID on the boat is the windshield marked as "Ultraglas...Fortin Plastcs, Inc....Saugus, CA". If anyone has any ideas about whether that company built fiberglass boats or just supplied the Plexiglass windshields for some of the other manufacturers it would give me a start. Thanks to anyone who might be able to help out.

Great site! Where could I purchase copies of some of the historical photographs?

Webmaster's note: Hello, Steve — there really isn't a good way to purchase individual photographs. Many have been sent by our viewers and exist only in electronic format. However, a great number of photographs are included in the two-volume set, "Santa Clarita Valley: A Pictorial History," 1876-1926 and 1926-1976, which you can purchase online or in person at the Saugus Train Station on weekends, 1 to 4 p.m.

I enjoyed going back in time to the creation of Magic Mountain in Valencia via your site. At age 20, in April 1971, I was the third person hired as a ride operator. I secured the position of foreman on the Eagle's Flight skyride that crested the mountain. I worked out of the "Shangrali" station atop the mountain, next to the skytower. When the first season ended, I was hired by Sea World San Diego (Co-owner of MM) to run their skyride to the Atlantian Resturant during the fall and winter. When MM reopened in the spring of 1972 I was back on top of the mountain at the Eagle's Flight! When MM first opened, the '71 earthquake totally wrecked all the new freeway structures at the 5 and 14 highways interchange. I lived in Beverly Hills then and just getting to work at MM was difficult and slow for some time. Well, I do go on! After Magic Mountain, a few years later, I became the "display coordinator" at the Hollywood Motorama Car Museum, "Where the Cars Are the Stars". Or were...Motorama closed after less than three years. It was fun to work in Hollywood, but I will never forget the excitement of working at Magic Mountain! Talk about being on top of the world! Valencia grew below, before my eyes. A nice way to spend two young years! Thanks....

While in the service in 1962, my Father sent me a picture of the first building to go up at the corner of what was then, San Francisquito Canyon Road, and Bouquet Canyon Road. It was a Gas Station. Chevron, I believe, but gas then was only .29 Cents a Gallon. I still have the Picture, and would send it to the Society, if I thought they wanted it. I Graduated Hart High in 1961. Andre Valuzet and Steve Stone, (Cliffies Son) among others were in that class. At our 20th Reunion, Andre brought "The General" from Dukes of Hazard to the Picnic at Hart Park. My Kid's STILL remember the ride they got in it. I Love this site, and wish I could have access to it when I lived there. I was too lazy to go to the Library to find the Information I wanted about the Dam Disaster. Keep up the good work, You all. This is so interesting, I could spend hours just reading and looking at Pictures.

I grew up in Moorpark, CA - hearing all the old timers talk about that tragic day. My grandfather's automotive garage was (supposedly) used as a temporary morgue. Many of the missing were never accounted for. I have made many trips up to the dam site to reflect on all the people who lost their lives that day. My mother (who was four years old at the time) and had just arrived in Ventura County. I took her up to the site when she was 76 years old so she could see the actual site for herself. If you haven't read "River's in the Desert", William Mulholland and the Inventing of Los Angeles", it makes for interesting historical reading.

I've visited the site and thought it full of history and interest. I feel fortunate that one person inparticular has had a hand in helping to bring to life the history of many of the buildings on site. That wonderful person is my uncle, Alan Howe. Unfortunatly uncle Al has passed away. As I write this his service is being conducted at the Ramona Chapel. I wish I could be there to share in honoring his ove, service and dedication he gave to his family, his friends and the SCVHS. I know his love for the renovation of the buildings was heartfelt and brought a sence of pride to him. What I saw him do with his talent was amazing . It goes without saying that he was loved by many, especially his daughter Diana, grandsons Rick, AJ, Christopher and his grandchildren. His memory of times he and I shared together will always be with me. HE will be missed. May he rest in God's peace.

Cool site. I just checked out the info on the San Francisquito Dam. My dad used to take me up that canyon to catch tadpoles in the wash when I was little. I plan to visit your site often. Brings back memories and I get a chance to see how vastly the Santa Clarita Valley has grown. When I attended Saugus High we had instruction on where to evacuate in case the Bouquet Dam were to burst as well. Thanks for the great site.

I was born in 1951 at Newhall Community Hospital. Went to Saugus Elementary School when it was surrounded by carrot fields . Went to Newhall Elementary , Placerita Jr.High ,Sierra Vista Jr. High , Graduated from Canyon High School in 1970. Does anyone remember " Bunny Love Carrots? Is it still around? We used to live in in a small house nearby. My Grandmother (Ramona Alvarez)cooked for the "Braceros", that worked the fields. I remember helping her make tortillias for them , they really liked her cooking, can still smell the tortillias! I remember a time when I attended Newhall Elementary School ,a few of my friends liked to entertain, sing and dance . Sooo, we decided to have a "talent "show for the Kindergarten classes. Little did we know that Mrs.Harris told all the classes about it, without our knowledge, when the curtains opened up,we were only expecting about 20 students in the auditorium, not the "Whole School"!! What a surprise we got! Then nobody wanted to perform! Hee!Hee! My friend Rosa Lopez and I were the first to perform , we sang a spanish song," El Rancho Grande", then we sang a little melody also in Spanish that we made up. I also remember a really good friend Denise Doty, she also performed, I think she did a ballet number. After it was all over, the audience clapped and went on to their classrooms. But my friend Rosa, and I think my sister Mary and I were invited back to the Kindergarten classes a few days later to sing to them again! I guess they liked us! I wonder if anyone remembers? When I was in First Grade at Saugus Elementary, I remember my teacher was Mrs. Scott, she was the nicest teacher ever! I remember the little play areas outside the classrooms with the little tables and chairs, they reminded me of miniature patios, separated by partitions of concrete maybe three feet tall,if I can remember there were about four classrooms with little patios. I really enjoy this site, brings back some really good memories. Am hoping to see more photos of Saugus Elementary School.

Thank you for this website. My wife, Doris, and I enjoy browsing through it because of our interest in western movies and the locations where they were made. This fall (2003) we attended the Lone Pine Film Festival. On the way there, we stopped in the Santa Clarita Valley area specifically to visit several locations where western movies were made. We were given a wonderful tour of Melody Ranch Motion Picture Studio & Museum by Sue Veluzat. We visited Placerita Canyon Park especially to see the Walker's Cabin, seen in many Roy Rogers' movies. We got a peek from the road of the 'movie town' located on Disney's Golden Oak Ranch. Also, we got to see the Andy Jauregui ranch house (seen in many of Roy's, Tim Holt's, Tim McCoy's, etc) from afar. We visited the Saugus Train Museum and William S. Hart Park. Finally, we stopped at Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park before proceeding north. Thanks again for helping to keep the 'real' and the 'reel' West alive. Please visit my home page which is my 'Tribute to Gabby Hayes' website.

PS In my opinion, an event, which would generate as much enthusiasm as the Lone Pine Festival, would be to have the locations on the Disney property (as well as Melody Ranch PIcture Studio, Walker's Cabin, etc) open to the public for a weekend a year.

I just came accross this great website after having a conversation with a friend about the St. Francis Dam. I lived in the Antelope Valley most of my life and in Green Valley, San Francisquito Canyon in 1970-71. During that time I was playing in a band called Rattlesnakes & Eggs. A friend told me the story of the St Francis Dam relative to where we were living at the upper end of the canyon in the old Butterfield Stage Line house. I was facinated by the story and was able to obtain a copy of the Book called Man-Made Disaster. After reading the book I went to the site of the former dam and viewed the huge pieces of concrete and steel that remained. I was so moved and emotional that I soon wrote a song which I performed in the area at many occaisions with my band and several other bands that I had over the next 20 years or so. I still play it on occaision as a soloist. here in Texas. I always preface it with a brief telling of the history of that area and time.

If you would like to have a copy of those lyrics for your history I would be happy to post them.

It is called "Man-Made Disaster, the story of the St. Francis Dam".

I love this site and really appreciate the pictures, history and the poetry and other lyrics that I have seen here. Sincerely,

Marty Prue Highland Village, Texas

She is 73 years old as isn't very tech savvy, so I told her that I would do an internet search and find all of the websites that include him and email her. I will be sure to include your website. SHe gets so excited when she sees "dad" when she watches one of his movies. In fact, Gene Autry spent time with Tracy during the last few days of his life when he made a surprise visit at the hospital here in Oregon.
