Thanks! In 1955 we moved from Sunland to Gaezley Ave. in Forest Park, Mint Canyon. My dad worked at Bermite and my mom was a waitress at the "junction". Went to Sulphur Springs elementary from Kindergarten in 1958 until first half of third grade, then we moved to Topanga Canyon and eventually to Nevada City area. I have class pctures of those years there, and I think a few photos of the 4th of July parade in Newhall. I clearly recall hanging out with Brian? Dyer ,Dyer's Honey and gorging myself on honey comb. My family moved to Newhall in 1963, and I stayed through high school, and graduated from Hart in 1967, the year the school declared the WWII temporary buildings permanent. I worked with Newhall Land and Farm on marketing, and realized early on that I didn't want to stay. I didn't! My first trip back to visit since I left was 2002, and I couldn't believe that the whole west side along I-5 had turned into a gigantic strip mall. For those of you who live there, you should have been there when it was a wonderful town.

Just found your fantastic web site! It is really great to see information about all the history of the area where I grew up, with my family since 1962. My parents Morrie & Geri Deason are still active in the SCV Chamber of Commerce and have been Ambassadors for many years now. It's wonderful seeing my best friend's parents Frenchie & Carol Lagasse as they once were. And my husband loves viewing all the landscape images as we remembered them & as they used to be before all the developement!! My husband Sam and I sold our Saugus home on Oaklar, in 1976, moved to Mariposa, CA. with our 2 daughters and 1998 settled in Gustine/Newman area to be around our 6 grandchildren (all of which are on a page on our site). If we uncover any old photos of history of the area we would love to send them to you for posting on your site. My husband is perplexed as to whly there is no mention or any images of the old Feed Lot in your history of Newhall? Thanks again for the site, Karen Campbell

How neat to find your pages! I grew up in the area with a lot of memories of soledad store-Mr Hanson , round, with a shiney bald head, who did most of the butchering and Mr. Olsen-tall and slim -usually in a flannel shirt with suspenders-he would set special figurines back for me on his desk until I could save up enough allowance to buy them- Kids perfect candy store-licorice whips and bit-o-honey...They had a glass front cabinet that they kept Indian jewelery in -Dad later said that no-one ever lost a pawn there, but they turqoiuse and obsidian stuff often lived there until the next rodeao. the restaurant and Aqua Dolce-Saugus and newhall-Mint canyon. i was pretty little, but have some strong memories-We lived in Aqua Dolce , Just below a lady with red hair who had a series of tanks(ponds) think she was raising frogs or catfish? The house had a glass covered patio and we had 60 milk goats. I remember coyotes coming in on the screen porch one night and tearing up my Shirley Temple doll- And there was a lady named Margaret who was a waitress at the drugstore fountain- a dentist that the folks rented from once-and Hank Darnell- (stories here) also a small bar where dad went I can remember seeing both Porter Wagoner and Buck Owens play there. Pat rick Liza , who owned Bermite Powder , was a good friend of Dad's- I remember the folks bought in Sand canyon at one time-Memories of Mint and Tick canyons-where the old bauxite mine was-movies being made-Dad provided stock to both rodeos and movies-ALL the oldtimers-met Roy Rogers-Monty- Chill Wills Gene Aurty- -The folks took off and deer hunted one year on hundreds of miles of fire trails in an old chevy coupe- I loved climbing in Bouquet Canyon by the waterfalls.

Anyhow-thanks for all the memories-I am not sure I would want to see it today- I like my memories-good job

What a fantastic website!! I found your site by accident and was so thrilled to read about all my favorite cowboy heroes from the past. It really brought back memories of Saturday Matinees and buying 10 cent comic books next door after the show. I thought I had the world by the tail a few years back when I stumbled onto webshots.com and found the website to have a huge collection of B western cowboy photo stills. I delightfully down loaded all the ones I knew and ones I had only heard about to use as screen savers. Well, your site takes the cake. In the last few weeks I' ve been having the time of my life reading up on those bios and have been finding them interestingly informative. Thanks for making my day or should I say month or maybe year. I 'm kind of hooked on them and I have to read a couple a day. (like a good book you can't put down)............................................Sincerely Carm P.S. Do you have all your infomation compiled in book form? That would be nice to have.

I was reading the article about John Quigley tree sitting in Old Glory and I had to stop by and sign the guestbook.

I'd love to contact John again; I had come to the tree sit five times while John was saving the tree, offering newspapers, bagles, cream cheese, drinks, and cash in paper bags to support the effort, amazed that such a wonderful man would undertake such a courageous act in the name of trying to save what's left of our country.

I had brought my sons to the tree sit so they could see first hand what I feel to be every American's duty: defend the Earth and at least try to slow down the destruction and try to leave a little bit of what's left for our children and their children.

In the alt.impeach.bush newsgroup, I posted the following:

When I read about John Quigley, the contrast between this real American hero and the average Republican is stark. Quigley actually helps make America a better place, working hard every day to make a difference that benefits others, getting nothing out of it but spiritual satisfaction.

He even protested against the Democratic National Convention.

Republicans? They're selfish, hate filled, spitefull, anti-American to the core, utterly in total disagreement with the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. If something doesn't benefit them personally, they don't do it; if they can make a buck or advance their bigotries, they're for it.

After seeing the Bush defenders and what they stand for, to recharge my faith in humanity, I see what John Quigley is up to lately.

I grew up in the North Oaks area in the early 60's when everthing there was just referred to as just plain "Saugus". As a kid I used to hike all the local mountains, hills, & valleys in the area for miles long before housing tracts, freeways, smog, and all the evils of civilization invaded what was once God's Country. I've seen a lot of changes that deeply sadden me. Precious memories of a sacred place lost to time is the greatest treasure this ole prospector has ever found. Legend has it that there is a church treasure hidden there from a local mission whose wealth defies that of every early mission built in the State of California. I use to hear the legend when I was kid and it sparked my imagination enough to make me who I am today,- a Mojave Desert prospector/gold miner. First off...What a wonderful, informative and resourceful site...Just fabulous!...I've been a resident of the wonderful communities of Hughes/Elizabeth lakes since 1975 now, and have always been fascinated with the rich history, as well as folklore associated with the area..Through the years, I've been fortunate enough to establish a modicum of rapport with the 'oldtimers'..(sadly, many of whom have passed on)...In any event, I'd learned about the old Munz resort (Later American Adventure, and now Paul Newmans' "The Painted Turtle" camp for ailing children)... AND the 'edgewater' which was a mom and pop 'overnight' camping spot providing horses for backcountry 'trail blazing' as well as a pool complete with a high board for summer fun...Though far long gone..The remnants of this small resort can still be viewed from the parking lot at Elizabeth Lakes north side...it's where the tree outcropppings are..though private property and access is privy to owners only..(the land and its adjacent property being owned by magazine mogul Robert E. "Pete" Peterson is heavily guarded and inaccessible)...I have some questions in reference to the area still unanswered, so if anybody can enlighten me..It would be greatly appreciated...First...at the end of San Francisquito Canyon road, where it T's onto Elizabeth Lake Rd..There's an old gas station on the south west corner...I've been told it was known as "anders? corner" and was active until sometime in the early 30's to mid 40's..Then, a subsequent owner...A doctor..would provide rudimentary services for residents of the area...Secondly..above the intersections of Elizabeth Lake Rd. and Johnson Rd...(where the two roads from Lancaster and Palmdale meet) there are old foundations of somekind of compound or residence...What are they?...Third...on a nightly 'dog walk' a couple of years ago..My curiousity prevailed and I took my dogs for a walk to the forementioned (guarded) area 'edgewater' where I was greeted by an extremely pleasant elderly woman (turned out to be Robert E. Petersons sister or cousin, I don't recall which)...In any event, she informed me that she and her husband ran the resort until the mid-late 60's...After some cordial 'small talk' she asked if I'd known about the old gravesites marked by tombstones a couple of hundred yards away on a bluff, above some ancient vineyards overlooking the lake....She said they were the graves of some old mexican landowners, presumably the ones which originally established the vineyard, and they may be related in some way to Tiburico Vasquez...They pre-date the turn of the century, so who knows...Also, she added that decendants of the two individuals would visit the graves about once a year up until the late 70's or so and maintain the site, after which all visitation suddenly stopped for some unknown reason....Anyone know about this?...Third..and finally last...En route to Lake Hughes from Elizabeth Lake...about mid-point and before the Munz/American Adventure/Painted Turtle compound used to stand and OLD, rather large building (now razed)...I've been told everything from...That's the old Munz Ranch house (doubtful, since it resembled a hotel/bordello/speakeasy more than a home)...Any Clues?....Thanks again for any replies...and to re-iterate...GREAT SITE!!!
